Course Title: To Move or Not to Move: How, Why, When and How Much?
Author/Instructor: Patricia Roholt P.T., C.H.T.
CEU's: 4.0
Prerequisites: None
Education Level: Intermediate/OT Category I
Target Audience: OT, PT, COTA, PTA
Cost: $110
Description: In this course, participants will learn the impact of motion vs immobilization of various connective tissues including bone, articular cartilage, tendons, ligaments and joint capsule. Methods of restoring joint mobility following injury or surgery are discussed including the various approaches to progressive stretching, joint mobilization and exercise.
Objectives -
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the qualities imparted by collagen and elastin in human connective tissue.
  • Explain the effect of immobilization on bone strength and describe ways to facilitate bone healing.
  • Describe what composes the “ground substance” of human tissue.
  • Explain the effect of applying protected “stress” to the healing tendon.
  • Describe two different techniques for strengthening muscle.
  • List 5 tissues that can contribute to loss of joint mobility.
  • Describe 3 treatment methods to aid in resolving edema in the hand.
  • Define elastic vs. plastic deformation of human tissues.
  • Describe the difference between creep and stress relaxation, and explain how these principles are used in the application of treatment methods and devices for increasing range of motion.
  • Describe the benefits of soft tissue mobilization in treating joint ROM restrictions.
